A recent study using rat models has raised awareness that a severe infection during pregnancy has the potential to elevate or weaken genes that have been linked to autism. The link between infection and the potential of increased risk holds true whether the infection was bacterial or viral.
Eric Courchesne was quoted saying, ” “Even though there may be different causes behind autism, these different causes seem to converge to common attributes.” The results from this study may account for the 37% rise in the risk of autism from the maternal infections.
One can only wonder where the research will go from here? Could we be on the verge of finding the root cause of ASD? Only time will tell.
